2205 duplex stainless steel plate delivers roughly double the yield strength of 316L with better pitting resistance — letting you use thinner sections in demanding chloride service. ZEMSS supplies GB-standard 2205 plate from major Chinese mills with full mill documentation, plus cutting-to-size from our Taiyuan facility.

The duplex microstructure (roughly 50/50 austenite-ferrite, documented on the mill certificate) is what gives 2205 its strength and stress-corrosion resistance — ask for the ferrite balance when you order.
Performance & Selection Guide
Choose 2205 when: chlorides are serious (seawater, brine, coastal structures, chemical process); loads are high and you want thinner, lighter sections; or stress-corrosion cracking rules out standard austenitics.
Stay with 304/316L when: chlorides are mild, fabrication complexity is high, or cost governs — 2205 carries a premium and needs more welding discipline.
Welding note: duplex welds need controlled heat input and matching 2209-class fillers to preserve the austenite-ferrite balance. Our fabrication team handles duplex welding procedures — see our 2205 fabrication guide for the full engineering picture, and compare grades in our grade comparison.
Typical Applications
- Offshore and marine structures, desalination plant components
- Chemical process vessels and pressure equipment — see our tank and vessel fabrication
- Oil & gas process piping and equipment
- Structural members where high strength allows thinner sections
- Pollution-control and flue-gas scrubbing equipment
FAQ
How much stronger is 2205 than 316L?
Yield strength is roughly double (≥450 MPa vs ≥170 MPa). In practice this often means you can use 30–40% thinner plate for the same design load.
Is 2205 magnetic?
Yes — the ferrite phase makes duplex grades magnetic. This is normal and is how duplex structure is partly verified.
When is 2205 overkill?
For indoor, freshwater or mildly corrosive service, 304/316L does the job at lower cost. 2205 earns its premium in chlorides, high loads or stress-corrosion-risk service.
Do plates ship with certificates?
Yes — mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1 type) with heat traceability, including chemistry, mechanicals and ferrite balance.
Can you cut and fabricate 2205?
Yes — cutting to size plus full fabrication (forming, duplex welding procedures, machining) from our Taiyuan facility.
